Lucio Fontana: On the Threshold

The exhibition Lucio Fontana: On the Threshold, curated by Iria Candela, Estrellita B. Brodsky Curator of Latin American Art in The Met’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, will be on view from January 23 until April 14, 2019 at The Met Breuer and Met Fifth Avenue, NY.

Lucio Fontana: On the Threshold, the first major survey of Fontana’s work in the United States in more than 40 years, will reexamine the career of one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. The exhibition will present examples of his iconic body of work, some of which include his widely known as Tagli (Cuts) or Spatial Concept series, slashed paintings that became symbols of the postwar era.

It will also explore the artist’s beginnings as a sculptor, including his ceramic work, as well as his ground-breaking environments, contextualizing the radical gesture of his Cuts as part of the artist’s broader search to integrate the space of art and the space of the viewer.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue and is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in collaboration with Fondazione Lucio Fontana.
