Nina Iaconetti has been making fried dough for 52 years, bringing the tradition with her from the Calabria region of Italy. And she was at it again Saturday in 90-degree heat, stretching out rolls of dough and placing them in a fryer. "I make it every couple of weeks because my grandchildren enjoy it," said Iaconetti, standing in a small patch of shade behind the Immaculate Conception Church sign. "I enjoy making it. It's tradition."
Within an hour of the start of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Italian Street Festival, several pounds of fried dough had already been sold, keeping Iaconetti and others busy. By the end of the 10-hour long festival, organizers predicted nearly 115 pounds of fried dough would be sold.
