Columbus admirers, protesters gather at Pueblo monument

For the 111th year, Puebloans of Italian descent and other nationalities joined together in front of the Christopher Columbus Piazza in the Mesa Junction on Monday to mark the federal holiday dedicated to the famous explorer and colonizer.


Hosted by Al Spinuzzi and Gino Carleo of the local Sons of Italy lodge, the celebration featured addresses by not only Italians but those of Hispanic (City Councilman Ray Aguilera), Slovenian (former U.S. representative Ray Kogovsek) and German (District Attorney Jeff Chostner) descent.
