Herrin Festa Italiana kicked off on Thursday, May 22 as the unofficial gateway to summer, according to festival leaders. The festival promises free live entertainment, plenty of food and fun for the whole family. Crews spent the entire day making final preparations for everyone expected to arrive in Herrin (Illinois) this Memorial Day weekend.
The festival started in 1991 and is a celebration of the rich Italian heritage in Herrin. Festival leaders say it’s expanded beyond the small town of Herrin. Saying that it, in fact, helps showcase all of southern Illinois. Herrin Festa Italiana Committee member Nina Helleny says there are plenty of fun-filled activities this entire holiday weekend, including some new ones.
