John Basilone, the only Marine in World War II to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross, is revered here in the town where he grew up. But now he is also being honored in a small town in Italy near where Basilone's father grew up. He came to the United States in 1903.
Colle Sannita, a town of about 2,400 people in the mountains about 50 miles northeast of Naples, will name street a name after Basilone when it becomes a sister city to Raritan Borough in August. Kim Van Note, Basilone's niece and a co-founder of the Basilone Memorial Foundation, will travel to Italy for the signing of the official sister city agreement between Colle Sannita and Raritan. The town will also designate Manila John Street after Basilone's Marine nickname.
