The annual upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival is one of the biggest events of the year in the Ohio Valley. But aside from honoring Italian history and providing authentic cuisine, it also provides for a number of scholarships for area students.

On Tuesday night at West Virginia Northern Community College, 15 students who have received scholarships from the festival were to be honored. In total, $15,000 was to be handed out to students in each of Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall Belmont and Jefferson counties, plus a scholarship to one culinary student at West Virginia Northern. The festival committee has been handing out scholarships for more than 20 years and the longevity and magnitude of its scholarship banquet is symbolic of the festival itself. It is second to only New York City in terms of size with more than 150,000 people attending each year.
