Center Stage: Italian friends and acquaintances

Several Italian families migrated to the Cambria coal mine when it was in operation from 1888-1928. Newcastle and Cambria were named after towns in England. Many of the Italian miners took homesteads in the area. The CB&Q railroad needed coal and the Cambria coal mine furnished this before the vein of coal ran out.

The following is some of the stories about these Italian miner homesteaders that I have known. Harry Tavegia was a powder man that homesteaded in the Skull Creek community. They held dances at the Skull Creek community hall from time to time. Occasionally the men took a break from the dancing to go get a drink out in the parking lot.
