Il Columbus day è parte fondante della storia americana e oggi rappresenta l’eredità culturale italiana negli Stati Uniti. L’esigenza di questa mozione nasce a seguito dei recenti episodi di intolleranza, volti a distruggere statue che raffiguravano Colombo.
A partire dal 2017, infatti, vi furono, diversi fatti di intolleranza verso alcuni simboli della storia americana ivi compreso Cristoforo Colombo, icona per gli italiani d’America che celebrano il Columbus Day, voluto nel 1937 dal Presidente Roosevelt, fino al punto che a Los Angeles nel 2017 veniva votata a stragrande maggioranza la cancellazione del Columbus Day.
