Italy is known for its culture and smooth sophistication, but go to the Apennine Mountains and you’ll find the country has a wild heart. Consisting of smaller parallel mountain chains, the Apennines extend 1,200 km along the length of the peninsula. In the northwest they join with the Ligurian Alps at Altare, and in the southwest they end at Reggio di Calabria, the coastal city at the toe of the boot.
The soaring peaks and rolling meadows are spectacular, but it is the biological and cultural diversity that really make these mountains special. Drive two hours east of Rome and you’ll be in the Central Apennines where you’ll find historic villages, scenic vistas and a variety of wildlife and wilderness experiences. Match that with excellent Italian food, wine and the warm hospitality of local hotels and restaurants and you’ll wonder why you didn’t visit earlier.
