Hartford residents support replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, city task force finds

A year after Hartford removed its statue of Christopher Columbus from the shadow of the state Capitol, a task force is preparing to recommend the city join countless others around the state and country in replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Renaming the Oct. 11 holiday is just one of several potential changes the city task force will propose as part of a comprehensive effort to address all Hartford monuments and memorials to the infamous Italian explorer. Decisions must still be made about the renaming of Columbus Boulevard downtown and the grassy area called Columbus Green where the bronze statue of Columbus stood for nearly 100 years.
