Joe Girardi swung and belted a grand slam Monday night at the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Banquet. The new manager of the Philadelphia Phillies delivered a lively, wide-ranging speech in which he connected with fans of all sports and all Philadelphia teams to earn a standing ovation at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill, N.J.
He praised Navy football star Malcolm Perry for the 304 rushing yards that made him the MVP of this past season’s Army-Navy game and pointed out how great it was that Perry is willing “to lay down his life to keep us safe.”
