As anger grows in Spain over authorities' poor response to floods that have claimed more than 200 lives, footage has emerged showing how one town escaped the worst of the devastation thanks to a 2,000-year-old Roman dam, 134 meters high and 120 meters long. The video shows torrents of water crashing down on a hillside in northeastern Spain.

Thanks to ancient Roman engineering that helped direct the dam's overflowing waters, the mass of water was diverted down a hillside, away from the town of Almonacid de la Cuba, which is not in the Valencia area but in the Zaragoza area. The Spanish press points out that residents were thus protected from flooding and that no damage or injuries were reported in the town.
