The Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage was weeks away when the American Theatre Company announced its plans to stage "My Big Gay Italian Wedding." But when playwright Anthony Wilkinson first began working on this musical comedy, the idea of a show about two men and the familial insanity that swirls around their efforts to be married was sheerest fantasy.
"I've had to alter the script over time, as gay marriage became legal in more and more states," Wilkinson said of the play that began off-Broadway in 2003, and which currently is running at the St. Luke's Theater in New York City. Wilkinson will be in Tulsa for the opening night performance and will take part in a question-and-answer session following the show.
