Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was an Italian patriot and military leader who helped free the Italians from foreign rule and unify the country. He began his military campaign to free the mainland and Sicily from foreign rule in 1848. Almost single handily, he hearkened volunteers and built an army to descend on the South.

In his path, he left the enemy either dead or on the run. He drove all the way to the sea and prepared his voyage across and around the island which he attacked from the south. In 1860, Garibaldi's thousand "red shirts" took Sicily in the name of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy.
