A family already synonymous with Italian food in St. Louis is starting a new chapter in Chesterfield. Mother-and-son duo Lia and Tony Buzzetta plan to open Buzzetta’s Italian Café (120 Chesterfield Valley Drive) in June. Here’s what to know before you go.
Lia's signature Italian dishes include chicken, veal, lasagna, and pastas. These tried-and-true favorites will share menu space with items that lean more toward the simple preparations of Palermo, where she remembers her family going shopping every day and never using frozen ingredients.

If Mama Rose’s, the venerable Italian restaurant in downtown Estes Park, kind of feels like you’re in someone’s home that’s because it was loosely styled to resemble Rose’s home back in Iowa. When the restaurant opened its doors some thirty years ago, the design and décor echoed the home of Julie Piper’s mom, the original Rose.
Julie’s brother Mario was the original owner. Today, Julie and her husband Rob Piper are the third owners. They also own Poppy’s Pizza and Grill just across the walkway from the Italian eatery.

A year ago, Todd Schulte and Cory Dannehl opened Earl’s Premier, a Brookside bar and grill bustling with orders for fresh oysters, shellfish, and frozen gin and tonics, with the patina of a long-time neighborhood gathering spot. Now they are set to do the same with Bacaro Primo, in the Crestwood Shops just southeast of the Country Club Plaza.
After remodeling, it opened a week ago in the former Cafe Europa spot at 323 E. 55th St. Cafe Europa relocated to 4928 Main St. “It’s Italian-inspired food that a couple of German guys are doing. We aren’t claiming to be experts,” Schulte said Wednesday.

Family-owned and still going strong 100 years later is rare after decades of consolidation in the baking industry. The Rotellas understand they’ve gotten lucky with each generation’s dedication to carry on the family business.
“Some restaurants we do business with, it’s over by the second generation because they don’t have the same fervor and determination that their parents did,” said Jim Rotella, vice president of sales for Rotella’s Italian Bakery, La Vista, Neb. “Each generation has wanted to continue this business. That’s been a big factor.”

Rotella’s Italian Bakery, La Vista, Neb., has seen continued growth and demand for bread, buns and rolls over a 100-year history. The Rotellas attribute their success to two things: quality product and excellent customer service.
“Quality and service is everything; if you skimp on that, you’re losing,” said Lou Rotella Jr., president and chief executive officer. “Customers can get bad service and bad quality anywhere.”

"For the most part, nothing is going to change," says Mike Rossi, who is planning to open Rossi's Italian Eatery in mid-April at 5800 West 38th Avenue in Wheat Ridge. For the past decade, the space was home to Mama Sannino's, an Italian eatery owned by Jimmy Sannino and his wife, Karen. A team of hospitality veterans are set to open Sofia’s Roman Pizza this March in the LoDo District of Downtown Denver. A fast-casual concept focused on Roman-style pizza, salads, and Italian-inspired cocktails, beer and wine, Sofia’s is located at 1530 16th Street Mall near the corner of Wazee and 16th.
Sofia’s is inspired by the idea of travel through the eyes of a twenty-something optimist exploring Italy for the first time. The feeling of romance that comes along with discovering a new city – and often times, ourselves – through getting a little lost and having a lot of fun along the way.

One of the most popular sandwiches to ever come out of New Orleans is the muffuletta. It was first served at Central Grocery, an Italian deli founded by Sicilian immigrant Salvatore Lupo in 1906.
Sicilian farmers would stop by Lupo’s deli in between shifts at the French Market and juggle plates of olives, salumi, and cheese for lunch. To make it easier to eat, Lupo decided to slap all the ingredients between two pieces of bread, and the muffuletta was born.

Virtually every major American city has its own Italian neighborhood. Some of the most well-known, such as Manhattan's Little Italy, Boston's North End, and Federal Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, lie on the East Coast.
San Francisco has North Beach, while farther inland, Chicago has University Village, per AFAR. Missouri, however, is special. It has not one but two distinct Italian neighborhoods in the two cities that bookend the state. To the east, St. Louis has The Hill, while on the west side, Kansas City has Columbus Park.

Tony Maucieri was chasing a dream when he moved his family — including his daughter, Dawn, who was 8 at the time — from Chicago to Crosslake in January 1974 to buy Echo Ridge, a small resort with a supper club that was located where Zorbaz is now.
“He always wanted to own a restaurant,” Dawn Maucieri, 56, said. “So they came up and looked at it, and that’s kind of how it all started.” Tony Maucieri died in 2018, but 49 years after the family first moved, Dawn Maucieri and her brother, Tony Maucieri Jr., are still carrying on his legacy as owners of Maucieri’s Italian Bistro.

A taste of Italy has arrived in Oskaloosa (IA), thanks to a woman with a vision of bringing Italian culture and cuisine to the heart of the Midwest. Paola Cipollina grew up in Genoa, Italy, an entire ocean away from small town Iowa. Her career, first in the fashion industry, then in film making, has led her to Milan, Italy; Los Angeles, California; and now to Oskaloosa, where she hopes to spread Italian culture through food and togetherness by opening her own shop, Rosso and Wine.
Rosso and Wine is a boutique-style Italian grocery store, which celebrated its grand opening on Dec. 10, 2022. Cip...

A New York City-based pizzeria is finally making its way to the Hawkeye State! We have quite a few big pizza chains here in the state of Iowa: Little Caesars, Happy Joe's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Casey's, Papa Murphy's, Papa Johns - but one place we don't have is Grimaldi's Pizzeria... yet!
Thanks to a new article from the Corridor Business Journal, we now know that Grimaldi's Pizzeria is set to open five Iowa locations, the first of which should arrive this year.

Running Scalzotto Italian Restaurant, a trio of Italian restaurants in three different Front Range zip codes, might seem like a tough gig to pull off for a family with three kids younger than age 21. Combine that with scratch-made sauces just like real Italian mammas still make and hand-crafted pasta served in charmed small-town surroundings — all graced with a sprinkle of dramatic sparkle — and you might wonder how their three locations can operate so smoothly.
To outsiders, Tonia and Giancarlo Scalzotto make it look easy, but if you pull back the curtain and get to know this powerhouse coupl...

Little-known fact: Neapolitan pizza isn't technically Neapolitan unless it's certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN) in Italy. About three weeks ago, Noto Italian Restaurant officially joined the ranks, making it the first and only restaurant in St. Louis to achieve the prestigious certification, which has only been awarded to around 100 other restaurants throughout North and South America. "Neapolitan is this process that just consumes you," Noto co-owner Wayne Sieve says. "Being able to offer that puts not only Noto on the map with Neapolitan, but also the St. Louis area...

I don’t expect a culinary epiphany from an Italian restaurant in a little strip mall in Woodland Park. But start to finish, that’s what I get. Roberto Calcagno grew up in the Genoa region of northwest Italy before eventually landing in Colorado Springs.
In 2018, he opened the Neapolitan pizzeria Basil and Barley, where he introduced his customers to the charcoal pizza crust. In the aftermath of the 2020 shutdowns, Calcagno got out of the restaurant business.

Michael Miceli grew up in Florida where he has fond memories of his father’s Italian cooking. Friends and family were always getting together around the table enjoying memorable meals prepared by Jerome Miceli.
The aroma of garlic, olive oil, parmesan, and a host of herbs always seemed to fill the house with what was a foretaste of the future. Having traveled all over Italy, his recipes gleaned from Tuscany, Sicily, and Cortona were used to create a host of quality, affordable, fast-casual, Italian restaurants in Colorado that bear the abbreviated family name.

Jason Hansen and Peter Sebastian, who own Estelle, recently opened a pizza and sandwich shop known as Mario’s in St. Paul. They put chef Evan Vranian in charge of the kitchen, and he’s got a sandwich that you need to know about.
Oh, There’s Pizza?Mario’s also makes a great pan pizza that some might compare to Detroit style. While it’s baked in square pans to create the shape that aligns for those who crave the cheesy-crisp edges, it’s not traditional Detroit, so they’re keeping it loose. The Supreme version is loaded with the goods, but the Artichoke pie has a lighter, fresh take.

As Denver’s great chefs go, so goes the city’s fine-dining scene—at least in the case of Sapore Prime Italian, which debuted in Littleton this past March. The kitchen is helmed by Brent Turnipseede, who honed his chops (and filets and strips) at downtown’s Guard & Grace and West Highland’s American Elm before moving from the Mile High City to Littleton this spring.
Since restaurateurs Terrence Gibbons and Daphnee Heiberg opened the upscale steak house—a rarity in the area—it has become a mainstay for fresh-made pastas and locally sourced meats prepared with elevated touches. Start with the bee...

Can a sandwich bread be transcendent? At a modest St. Paul sandwich shop, it certainly is. The team behind my current favorite restaurant in town, Estelle, opened Mario’s and brought in one of the masters of dough to oversee the kitchen.
Evan Vranian toured sandwich shops in New York to home in on the perfect Italian white sesame seed bread. It’s crispy outside, airy inside, and dense enough to hold up a series of impressive sandwiches ($14).

The FX series The Bear has been getting lots of praise for its accurate portrayal of what it's like to work in the back of the house at a restaurant, from dealing with chef egos to the chaos of service to the lingo (yes, chef). If you haven't seen it yet, the show follows Jeremy Allen White (Lip from the American version of Shameless) as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a chef who experienced a quick rise to fame in the fine-dining world before going back home to Chicago to take over the family business, the Original Beef of Chicagoland, following the death of his older brother.

A new Italian restaurant has taken over the former Mimi’s Old Town Mexican Restaurant space at 321 N. Mead. Introducing Bocatto: Eatery and Pasta. They recently opened and of course, we had to stop by and check out the new eatery in Old Town. The menu featured pastas, paninis and a ton more. Many Italian classics and pretty much any popular Italian dish could be had.
We started our visit off with the scampi shrimp toast. The shrimp and sauce it was doused in were excellent; nice sweet flavor to them. The toast, unfortunately, was way too hard. Biting into it was a chore, and felt as if it was...

Des Moines, Iowa has a lot of great Italian restaurants – so many that people often call the area where they’re most commonly found the Hawkeye State’s Little Italy. You can find all the classics – chicken parmesan, lasagna, and of course pizza. But to find the best pizza in Iowa, you’ll want to go to a place that’s been dishing them out since 1945.
Chuck Celsi’s Tavern Restaurant, often just called The Tavern, is the oldest still-operating Italian restaurant in Des Moines, beating out Noah’s Ark by only a year. It’s undergone a lot of changes in those almost eighty years, but what hasn’t chan...

At Viviano’s Festa Italiano’s Chesterfield location, sandwiches and Italian groceries reign supreme. At its new Fenton location, however, you’ll also find the likes of fried calamari, salmon pasta, mushroom ravioli and elevated desserts on the menu. “It’s still a deli café, but it’s now a full service kitchen with servers, bartenders,” executive chef Ivan Turrubiates says.
“We have banquet rooms as well. Basically, they hired me on to elevate the food that was coming out.” Turrubiates was officially hired as executive chef in March, but he was consulting for Viviano’s even before that to help...

Sometimes things aren't always what they appear to be and that happens to be the case at this fantastic Italian restaurant in Denver, Colorado. Everyone loves authenticity, and there's no better authentic Italian restaurant in Denver, Colorado than the Odyssey Italian restaurant at 603 E 6th Avenue.
The very first time I went to visit Odyssey Italian Restaurant was honestly remarkable. My cousin and I were visiting Denver for the first time and were looking to find some good Italian food. We quickly did a search for the closest Italian restaurant and found Odyssey.

Denver is losing its old-school red-sauce joints. The latest to throw in the towel? Dino's Italian Food, which has been serving at 10040 West Colfax Avenue for almost six decades, growing from a small storefront to a sprawling, 240-seat restaurant. But Dino's is closing at the end of September, the owner revealed earlier this month. The rambling Lakewood restaurant was founded by Dino Dipaolo, and his daughter, Judy Duren, still runs it.
