When Amanda Minervini, assistant professor and director of the Italian Program, was planning her First-Year Program class on the rise of fascism last year, she had an idea that would inspire and teach her students more than just the history of fascism: Equine-Guided Learning and Healing Experience.
“EGLHE inspires students to look for communication in places they are not used to, for instance, in the very subtle ways an equine face and whole body change to signal relaxation, pleasure, discomfort, satisfaction, or wanting a carrot,” says Minervini. “[Horses] are the masters of embodied emotions...

Intellectual Quotient (IQ) is a score that is obtained through a test designed to measure or assess intelligence, that is, an individual's cognitive development. Obviously this is not an absolute indicator of intelligence, but a high IQ is linked to many genius minds. That of an average individual is between 85 and 115; a score above 130 indicates exceptional intelligence, and above 160 points there is a high probability of being a genius.
The late Stephen Hawking, for example, had an IQ of 160, the same as Albert Einstein. This little girl who at only 9 years old is attending college, on the...

For the past 100 years, Assumption Catholic Parish and School has been a staple of the small yet faithful community in Welby. A humble church that sprouted from the hard work of Italian immigrants in 1912 has marked a milestone anniversary thanks to the dedication of parishioners and the grace of God. In the 1920s, Father John Giambastiani launched a religious education program for the young parishioners, creating the foundation for what would be 100 years of education.

Art—literary, visual, performative—has served throughout history to translate the suffering experienced by individuals and societies during a catastrophic pandemic, as well to conceive and, indeed, to spur renewal of the individual and of the social order.
The Medieval author Giovanni Boccaccio sets his masterwork, the Decameron (1351), in the midst of the mass mortality of the 1348 Bubonic Plague, which the author witnessed first-hand in his city of Florence. More than half of the citizenry, including Boccaccio’s father and stepmother, died of the contagion, which would extinguish the lives o...

I am very happy to be able to announce my commitment to swimming and studying at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Leaders at St. Joseph School in Mandan hope that starting a Montessori program to offer a more hands-on approach to education will boost student enrollment, just as it did for Christ the King School across town. “For decades, we just haven’t really seen an influx in our school,” said the Rev. The school started a Montessori program last fall for its youngest children, ages 3-6, and it plans to expand the effort to cover all grades next school year. It also will add an “adolescent” program covering traditional junior...

Five dollars at the Iowa State Fair goes further than you think. Know the right stand and a snow cone, some cotton candy, a strawberry shake, a ride down the big slide or even an order of X-Treme Balls (pork tenderloin balled up on a kebob with pickles and onions) will only cost you a Lincoln. But all the Scarpino family wanted for their $5 was a smile. And that was exactly what they got — 400 times over.

A culture dies when its language dies. Any linguist or anthropologist can testify to this fact. When Franco Giannotti, a native of Trieste, founded Italiano Per Piacere (IPP) in 1999, he understood this very well. He was part of an Italian club in St. Louis which didn't want to have anything to do with the Italian language. It didn't make any sense to him why an "Italian" club didn't want to speak Italian. I completely agree with this sentiment.

Dean, Sammy and Frank or, more accurately, uncanny facsimiles of the famed Rat Pack, helped the Sons of Italy celebrate 20 years of advancing the educational aspirations of deserving students. Saturday at a Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center ballroom appropriately decked out to the nines in a Las Vegas motif, the Order of Sons of Italy Lodge #2738 gifted 21 young men and women with more than $26,000 in scholarships and gift bags through its annual Scholarship and Citizen of the Year Awards Gala.

It's meaning "learning Italian while playing or having fun" is a key message that Giovanna Leopardi gives to parents who would like their children to learn Italian. These classes, for kids ages 2 - 12, are not your regular sit down classes. Kids are able to draw on the blackboard, paint, color, or make necklaces with pasta, all while in an Italian-speaking setting.

In the early 1970s, Montessori education was largely unheard of in Montana and completely nonexistent in institutional form. But a group of parents in the Flathead Valley had come across the educational method elsewhere and wondered whether they could bring it to Northwest Montana.
Not much pointed to Kalispell as an obvious launching point for this pedagogical movement, but the parents banded together and worked with community leaders to launch the Flathead Montessori Society in 1972, long believed to be Montana’s first Montessori school, although an educator in Billings has said she started...

For 18-year-old Angelica Dore, 2017-18 is turning out to be a year of first-time experiences: Studying anatomy at the high-school level and playing on a basketball team. Sampling new foods, such as peanut butter paired with jelly. Watching with wonder as grown-ups, not just children, wear costumes for Halloween.
“I do recommend it,” the young woman from Italy said, explaining she’s enjoying her year as an exchange student at Wyoming Area High School and would like to see others take advantage of similar opportunities. Actually, there’s no shortage of honor students from Europe and Asia who are...

The precedents of women in public relations, international news, and multicultural relations are unfortunately not household names—yet. Missouri State University faculty Dr. Etta Madden uncovers three remarkable women and their work to connect the United States with Italy and the globe in general. Madden's book in progress, "Engaging Italy," will show the parallel of human need for connection in the 19th and 21st centuries.

"People think of our age, connected with the internet, as one where we all want to be socially engaged, but that's not so different from the 19th century. We had press in other countries way before planes even existed," Madden said.

The winner of the $3,000 ICC Study Abroad Program scholarship is Magdalena (Lena) Schroeder, a sophomore majoring in Mathematics and Italian Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Lena's first experience with Italian culture and language occurred early in life when she lived in Austria with her family. Later exposures to Italy ultimately led to her decision to study Italian at the U of M. There, she has actively worked to improve her skills, going to conversation hours, skyping with a native Italian through the Tandem program, and listening to Italian music.

She also hopes to work at Concordia's Lago del Bosco Italian immersion camp this summer. She sings with an a cappella group on campus and serves as an officer. In her free time, she loves playing soccer and is an avid fan of Arsenal FC. She is thrilled to be going back to Europe, where soccer is a big deal. Lena will be studying at the University of Bologna for the 2016-17 academic year. She is planning to take courses in math history, linguistics, and political science. We congratulate Lena and look forward to reading about her learning adventures in Italy that will be posted regularly on our website! Bravissima!

"Gentile signorina," the purse-snatcher wrote to his victim at the beginning of a short story that University of North Dakota professor Elizabeth Harris has translated. He had been examining the contents of the purse, imagining what his victim is like and coming to realize he had fallen in love, she said.

"Gentile signorina" literally means "Dear Miss" in Italian and it has the impersonal feel of "Dear Sir or Madam" in English. But "Dear Miss" just isn't used in English. So, after some agonizing, including a small debate with author Giulio Mozzi, Harris decided on "Dear signorina."

Megan Jones first saw a picture of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti in a high school history textbook, but moved on after being told they wouldn't be on the test. As a sophomore at Indiana University, assigned to write about something in the university's rare book library, she came across the intriguing figures again. This time she dug in, calling up the holding and writing about the library's collection of letters the two men wrote from prison before being executed.

Now, Jones has her own collection of about 40 books about Sacco and Vanzetti, for which she recently won second place in this year's National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest. She traveled to Washington, D.C., in October to receive her award at the Library of Congress, which included a $1,000 cash prize for herself and $500 for KU Libraries.

If education is all about breaking boundaries and surpassing limits, studying abroad may be one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to learn, at least according to Davide Bolognesi, former visiting professor of Italian.

"I was particularly impressed by the students," he says of his time teaching at CC during the Spring 2014 semester. "They all were eager, talented, and curious about Italian culture. We conducted excellent projects together." Though he'd taught in the U.S. previously, this was his first experience on the Block Plan. Bolognesi says the format lends itself specifically to foreign languages by providing students with an immersive experience, citing the "transformational power of travel."

Crossing the ocean can be an important step in the journey to creating American teachers who engage in culturally responsive teaching. University of Kansas educators have published writing detailing a program that takes future educators to Italy to participate in a full-immersion study abroad program that results in a better understanding of the challenges culturally and linguistically diverse students encounter in schools.

Barbara Bradley, associate professor, and Diane Nielsen, professor of curriculum and teaching at KU, have authored a pair of chapters detailing a study abroad program that takes pre-service teachers to Carpi, Italy, to provide them with a cultural experience that prepares them to be effective teachers.

The massive immigration of European settlers to the United States in the late 18th century included a large number of Italians who settled in southeast Kansas to take jobs as deep-shaft coal miners. Two of these families who followed the dream, the Battitori family and the Iager family, merged a generation later.
Dr. John Battitori, who addressed an audience at Corley auditorium Wednesday, Oct. 30 is a product of this merger. He is one of the featured themed semester speakers arranged by the Institute of International Studies for the Italian semester. Battitori is a second generation Italian-American and one of the first of his generation not working as a coal miner.
