A plaque was delivered on the occasion of June 2, Italy's Republic Day, to commemorate Arturo Di Modica, the sculptor originally from Vittoria, Sicily, who is world famous for the Wall Street Bull. It was delivered into the hands of New York Mayor Eric Adams by Antonino Laspina, director of the Italian Trade Agency.
The plaque certifying the authorship of the Charging Bull, the famous Wall Street bull, reads, "The statue is a creation of Sicilian sculptor Arturo Di Modica. If you’re going up against the mob, you’d better have a gang. The New York Police Department put one together back in 1904. New immigrants, and new kinds of crime, were flooding the city and the old Irish cops on the beat didn’t understand either. It was time to launch a special force. They called it “The Italian Squad.”
Paul Moses’ latest book pays homage to these officers in “The Italian Squad: The True Story of the Immigrant Cops Who Fought the Rise of the Mafia.” It’s also a story of ethnic stereotypes, immigration battles, and police brutality. It began one sweltering turn-of-the-century...

In 1932, 98 percent of the heads of households in the area of New York City now variously known as Little Italy, Soho, or the Lower East Side were Italian emigrants, The New York Times reported. This wave of immigrants, who largely arrived in the U.S. from the 1880s through the 1920s, were preceded by the Italianate, a mid-19th-century tripartite style of ornamentation and brickwork that changes as the building rises.
Almost a century later, the area’s demographics have changed. But for the facade of the Grand Mulberry, a seven-story, 20-unit building at 185 Grand Street completed last year a...

Jack Spatola said that he first got the idea to offer free legal services to the Italian-American community when speaking with a rabbi in 1983. Nearly 40 years later, Spatola is finally getting to realize that dream.
Spatola is the president of the Federation of Italian-American Organizations, which operates Il Centro, an Italian-American cultural center located on 18th Avenue. While the neighborhood has undergone drastic changes in recent decades, Spatola hasn’t changed much from 1983 in that he’s always looking for ways to help ItalianAmericans and for ways to improve his community.

Lawyers for both the city of Syracuse and the Columbus Monument Corporation presented arguments on Monday to the New York State Appellate Division’s Fourth Judicial Department amid CMC’s ongoing challenge to Mayor Ben Walsh’s plans to remove the Christopher Columbus monument in downtown Syracuse. The hearing comes after a year-long appeal process through which Walsh has pushed to reverse a state judge’s March 2022 decision favoring CMC.

In 1882, a group of men left Roseto Valfortore (Valley of Roses), a town of 1,300 near the province of Foggia in the region of Puglia, to set sail for New York. The men spent their first night in America sleeping on the floor of a tavern on Mulberry Street in Manhattan’s Italian neighborhood.
They eventually found work in the slate mines of Bangor, Pa. There, far from the opportunity they expected, they were confronted with prejudices as immigrants, tolerated substandard conditions, and often resided in homes that were nothing more than shacks. The Italians were considered uncultured and unedu...

The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte are some of the greatest works in the Western musical tradition, and did much to build the reputation of their composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
But the man who wrote their libretti, Lorenzo Da Ponte (1749–1838)—an Italian poet who spent the last years of his life teaching Italian at New York City’s Columbia University—was generally forgotten by non-experts.

It marked the first in person commemoration since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the gathering to go remote.

In March 2022, New York State Supreme Court Justice Gerard Neri issued a ruling to keep Syracuse’s Christopher Columbus statue standing in downtown Syracuse. Now, a year later, local community organizations have filed amicus briefs to support Mayor Ben Walsh’s plan to remove the monument.

To many who'd known Antonin Scalia it wasn't a surprise, because more than any lawyer in recent history, he held in such high esteem not just the words of the Constitution (and their original meaning) but the Constitution's structure and the purpose behind it.

Bare trees and the white snow piled here and there unevenly. Winter is coming to an end and the sun melts the ice. The paths to the Sardinian donkeys are impossible to walk on with city shoes.
If the rolling Hudson Valley is naturally uneven on the outside, the art inside is deliberately uneven: Arte Povera, Italian art from the 1960s onward. A billionaire cable TV empire owner does not own a yacht, private jet and mansion on a beach, instead he shelled out $170 million to buy an Italian pro soccer team. Rocco Commisso, 73, bought ACF Fiorentina in Florence three years ago. His wife told him that if he insisted on buying a team, it needed to be somewhere nice. The price tag was also a bargain for a European club.
The American owner is under relentless scrutiny by Fiorentina fans who demand that he pay whatever it costs to bring in stars and end their 50-year championship drought. Fiorentina, which is nicknamed “La Viola” — “the P...

Buffalo's Italian Cultural Center (CCI) hosted its first ever St. Joseph's Table on Saturday. The Italian tradition commemorates a medieval drought and famine where people facing starvation turned to St. Joseph for help. Now people show their appreciation with an altar music and a feast.
"I think it's part of our heritage, celebrating St. Joseph's Day. A lot of people remember growing up that way. Their families put on the big spread. I've heard so many amazing stories of people telling me what it was like growing up with St. Joseph's Day . All of the food all of those really wonderful traditi...

My father worked with his hands beginning at the age of 10, and he never stopped, right up to the very day he walked off the job site and into the hospital, where he swiftly passed away. He never wanted my brothers to take over the landscaping business he had built. He wanted them to wear suits and ties and sit behind desks.
You probably know this story; there’s a good chance it’s your own: Our ancestors wanted for us lives that were easier than their own, lighter lives, lives gentler on our bodies, minds and spirits. In order to give us these things, they gave us to America, and the hope and...

As a kid in Gravesend, Brooklyn, I wore my Italianess everywhere in my neighborhood. You could spot it in my walk, my speech, and in my attitude. I guess it was like Tony Manero’s walk in the opening scene of the iconic film Saturday Night Fever.
But to survive, I had to keep my identity in check as I stepped between two different lives: the one I lived at home, and the one I lived at school. They were both very different; it called for code-switching to succeed in both.

These historic neighborhoods started taking shape more than a century ago, often in competition, and leaders say since Sept. 11, 2001, both communities have been trying to bounce back. But the COVID-19 pandemic o...

The Center for Italian Modern Art, known as CIMA, was founded here in New York in 2013 by art historian Laura Mattioli. Her start in the art world began with her father's collection, something he created as a response to the violence of World War II.
Mattioli joined "News All Day" on Women Wednesday with more on their new exhibition and the contributions of the center to Italian culture here in the city. The center, which is on Broome Street in SoHo, features art exhibitions in an intimate environment. Today, as memory of past opera greats fades a bit, especially that of singers and impresarios who largely predated the age of recording, it is impressive that one of the first truly worldwide celebrities was a daughter of the Two Sicilies who studied and came of age in New York.
Adelina Patti and her parents, siblings, and extended family toured the Americas, Europe and Australia and were interconnected through collaboration and marriage to several prominent musicians and impresarios. In the 19th century, a unique circle of Italian opera families, and the Patti family in particular, had a far-...

A rare, nearly 300-year-old violin that has been in the collection of the late businessman Sau-Wing Lam and exhibited twice at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will be auctioned at Tarisio next month, with an estimate in excess of US$10 million.
The instrument, circa 1731, is one of only about 150 known violins handmade by Italian master Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù, one of the three great violin-making families in Cremona, Italy. Compared to Stradivari violins of the same era, Guarneri violins have deeper and more sonorous tones and were prized by such musicians as Isaac Stern, Jascha...

Every traveler's must-see list includes Little Italy because of its genuine pasta meals, which are offered by the top Italian restaurants, and its romantic, old-New York ambiance. In the 1880s, immigrants from Naples and Sicily flooded the region, creating the once-Italian neighborhood that now stretches from Canal to Houston Streets, between Lafayette Street and the Bowery.
The majority of it is now concentrated in the blocks surrounding Mulberry Street, which also happens to be home to some of New York City's hottest boutiques and bars, but what is left is still going strong.

In 1926, Italian Futurist painter Fortunato Depero debuted “Squisito al selz” at the 15th Venice Biennial. The painting advertised Campari, a popular Italian aperitif, and belonged to a genre Depero called quadro pubblicitario or “advertising painting.”
Depero’s Biennial presentation was an offshoot of a half-decade collaboration between the artist and the brand; in 1924, he was put in charge of the company’s advertising brand and campaigns, and produced many materials for them in his signature style.

The baton of leadership has been handed over at La Voce di New York, the first Italian-English digital newspaper in the U.S. Stefano Vaccara, founder and editor of the newspaper since 2013, will be replaced by Giampaolo Pioli, a longtime New York correspondent for newspapers of the Quotidiano Nazionale group (Resto del Carlino, La Nazione and Il Giorno) and a respected figure for many Italian journalists in the United States.
Mr. Vaccara, who will be continuing to cover news from the United Nations and write as a columnist, recalled how “the idea for this newspaper was born from the great oppo...

Turning 100 is magical, but when you exceed that number, well — you are really extra special and breaking records. The family of Lena Vallone Barone just couldn’t wait to shout the news from the rooftops! Lena is 108!
And according to granddaughter Chris Orlando and her research, her grandmother is the 544th oldest person in the United States — out of 332 million people. There are 355 people who are 108.

Alias Coffee in Troy has more than biscotti on the menu these days. Recently congressman Paul Tonko dropped by to announce a half million-dollar federal grant to assist in the redevelopment of Troy’s Little Italy Historic Market Place project. Add that to the $375,000 awarded back in August, and that is nearly a million bucks.
DeFazio owner Rocco DeFazio says he excited for the funds. “A lot of people over a lot of years working very hard to see this come and I think the money is going to be well spent. I think it’s going to draw more people to this neighborhood,” said DeFazio.

The Frick Collection in New York has long touted a rich assortment of old master paintings, including Renaissance portraits of powerful figures. None of those portraits, however, depicted a lone woman—until now.
Portrait of a Woman, painted by Italian Renaissance master Giovanni Battista Moroni circa 1575, is joining the Frick’s permanent collection, the museum announced in a statement last week, adding that the piece is “the most significant Italian Renaissance painting the museum has acquired in more than half a century.”

Spanning over 300 years of sculpture, painting and decorative art, Modern Medici: Masterpieces from a New York Collection, will be offered at Christie’s in New York on 27 January.
Inspired by the 15th-century Italian private spaces of study and contemplation known as studiolos, the spirit of this collection is one of scholarly interest and a studied appreciation for beauty. Above all, it reflects the age-old phenomenon of visitors coming away from Italy enriched in every sense.
