First came the flood. In February 2020, three pipes burst at the Italian Community Center, sending 180,000 gallons of water flowing through the building at 302 Rantoul St. By the time the water could be turned off, the interior was completely destroyed. Next up? The COVID-19 pandemic, which arrived in force the following month.
Several members of the club died from the disease. Construction costs soared, putting into question whether the club could afford to rebuild. Members wondered if the ICC, whose roots in the city date back nearly a century, would ever reopen. “We were in shock,” Italian...

John LaBarca, the jovial giant of radio who spread love for his Italian heritage with his flagship Sunday show Italian House Party on several area radio stations most prominently WICC, has passed away, according to posts on his Facebook page. He was 76.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, LaBarca landed a captain’s job at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan as a young man that helped ignite his flourish as a story teller with a toastmaster’s touch. He regaled audiences with relatable stories from his childhood: food, holidays, family and music. He was also generous with community organizations, leverag...

It was always important for families to keep their personal issues in the family. When something went wrong, or a difficult time was encountered; the family came together to help each other. This attitude of self-reliance was instilled in the cultural practices that many of the immigrants understood from their own family experiences back in the villages and towns that they left in Italy.
So here in the new community that was now their village, the attitudes regarding self-reliance remained powerful incentives to always take care of the necessities first. Bills were always paid when due, especi...

Scrap metal or monument? Johnston picks the latter. Removed from its Providence pedestal in 2020 and locked away in storage, a 130-year-old statue depicting Christopher Columbus will be re-erected in Johnston’s War Memorial Park in October. In the 1890s, the same French artist who sculpted the Statue of Liberty — Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi — crafted a sterling silver statue of the Italian explorer credited with rediscovering the New World.
Impractical for outdoor exhibition, the silver statue was melted down into 30,000 ounces of scrap silver. However, in an effort to immortalize the work of a...

The second book in my New England pottery book series, The Moses B. Paige Company: The Last of the Peabody Potteries (published by Historic Beverly, 2020), told the story of Moses Paige (1847/48-1941), who was born in Weare, N.H., before he moved to Winthrop, Maine, for school, around the age of ten.
Once he reached adulthood, Paige became a farmer and relocated to Peabody (formerly South Danvers), Mass., about 1872. His career path quickly changed and he was soon employed at Joseph Reed’s (1809-1884) Pottery in Peabody, the former location of the longstanding Osborn family pottery, which date...

Hi, the Italian-American Defense League Monument Task Force and IADL members want unity and justice. We believe on June 24, 2020, the City of New Haven illegally removed Wooster Square's Columbus statue. That day the protests of 50 or more people of Italian descent were ignored when the city lifted the statue off its pedestal and placed it face-down in storage.
The symbolic bond that cemented the acceptance of Italians as Americans in Connecticut was broken. New Haven's Christopher Columbus statue was dedicated by Paul Russo, representing united Italian societies, on October 21, 1892. The stat...

Unofficially known as Boston’s “Little Italy,” the North End is one of the Hub’s smallest neighborhoods—a one-square-mile area jutting into Boston Harbor. But it has played an outsized role in the city’s cultural, historical, and culinary history. Within convenient walking distance of Government Center, it’s Boston’s oldest residential area, with a history of European settlement stretching back to the early 17th-century Puritans.
Over the past 400 years, the area has been home to an early African American community and to waves of Irish, eastern European Jewish, and more recently, Italian immi...

The former Christopher Columbus statue that was vandalized numerous times in Providence before being taken down will find a new home in Johnston. Former Providence Mayor Joe Paolino, who bought the statue in March, announced Johnston will be the new home as a way for the town to celebrate the Italian community.
“I am thankful that Mayor Polisena Jr. has agreed to host the statue and create a destination for Italian American history in the Town of Johnston. The Mayor is playing an important role to ensure that this historic symbol is not melted down and turned into scrap metal,” said Paolino.

When Joseph Nigrelli Sr. — the patriarch of Westerly's "First Family of Jewelry" — answered the knock on his front door one recent afternoon, he was a little taken aback to see Dr. Daniel Gaccione standing there before him.
When Gaccione announced he was there to tell Nigrelli he'd been named the Dante Society of Westerly's 2023 Person of the Year, Nigrelli was doubly taken aback. "It was quite a surprise," said a smiling Nigrelli earlier this week as he sat at his kitchen table, recounting the story.

This is a story about a Montpelier family finding their people in present-day Italy. But the story began in 1885 with the birth of Carmelo La Terra Bellina (“Carmelo” meaning “the beautiful earth”) in Pozzallo, Italy, a small city on Sicily’s south coast.
The city’s location on the Mediterranean contributed to its value as a seaport and reflects the island’s multiple layers of war and conquest from pre-historic settlers to Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Moors, Normans, and finally the Bourbons. During World War II, allied troops landed just west of Pozzallo as part of Operation Husky.

Joining the Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge 2805 began as a family affair for Mark DeFranco. Mark, the group’s treasurer, who joined in 2004 to be with his cousin and the group’s founder Neil Velleca, Sr., saw it as an opportunity to socialize and work with other Italian-Americans.
“My cousin, Neil Sr., thought it would be a great idea to have a Sons and Daughter chapter in North Haven,” Mark says. “I’ve been in there since the beginning. I’ve been the treasurer the whole time, the whole 19 years. I think because it’s quite a bit of work.”

St. Michael School was built in 1940 during the period when the immigrant children were being more fully exposed to the influences of the secular education opportunities that were part of the American system. The ethnic parishes were encouraged to create local schools that were more aligned to those in their countries of origin, where there was less distinction between church and state.
The school on New Haven's Green Street, a neo Art Deco-fronted building, was adjacent to the original parish center, St. Michael Hall. With space for eight classrooms, it was designed to accommodate children ri...

Once upon a time, there were so many Italian relatives in my family that every table, chair and corner was occupied in my Nonna’s large kitchen. When Lisa DeNatale set out to obtain Italian citizenship based on her Sicilian lineage, things got complicated fast. Non-Italians can obtain citizenship if an ancestor was born in Italy, even one as far back as great-great-grandparents. DeNatale's paternal grandparents, for instance, were born in Sicily and came over to the U.S. in the early 1900s.
But the rules for proving that connection are byzantine. Would-be Italians must track down birth, death and marriage certificates that might have been recorded on paper decades or even a century ago, and disqualifying exceptions abound.

Despite heartened pleas from community residents and Italian heritage groups to save the Christopher Columbus statue, only two people offered to buy it from the city, and at less than 10% of its appraised value.
In light of the lack of interested buyers, the city is reissuing its request for proposals, as approved by the Providence Board of Parks Commissioners on Oct. 26. The decision continues the yearslong saga of what to do with the historic, yet controversial city statue, which was taken down from its pedestal in Columbus Square in June 2020 after being repeatedly vandalized.

A towering Christopher Columbus statue in Worcester has again proven to be one of the most potent political forces in the city, dividing the city council and driving hostility between local ethnic communities.
The Worcester City Council Tuesday voted against having a discussion about the removal of the Washington Square monument, which stands outside Union Station. District 4 Councilor Sarai Rivera sought to convene a community discussion on the statue, citing the legacy of Columbus' role in the slaughter of indigenous people in the Caribbean.

The City Council is scheduled to reignite the debate on the Christopher Columbus statue Tuesday night, as District 4 Councilor Sarai Rivera is requesting the city manager organize a “diverse community discussion to determine the best course of action for removing the Christopher Columbus statue from any public space.”
“It is a very hurtful and oppressive symbol that should not be in a public space,” Rivera said in an interview Sunday. The Columbus statue in Worcester was erected in 1978, donated to the city by attorney Nunziato Fusaro in memory of his wife, Esther. It is located in Washington...

The air is cool and crisp, the leaves are colorful, and you can get pumpkin-spice everything. But that’s not why we are excited for October. It is because October is Italian Heritage Month – a time for Italian Americans to embrace traditions, family memories, and yes, foods!
Speaking of food, we enjoyed preparing a pasta dinner for members of the local Boys’ and Girls’ Club this month. It looked like the boys and girls who came out to the Civic Center had a fun night. The homemade chocolate chip cookies and brownies were a huge hit also! We don’t know who had a better time – the Lodge members...

His life and deeds have been highlighted in many publications so, rather than reiterate these facts, we are glad to share some episodes about the arrival of the Scalabrini Fathers in Boston and St. Scalabrini's visits in September and October of 1901.

A new sculpture honoring New Haven’s Italian American community is one step closer to coming to Wooster Square now that the Elicker Administration has formally submitted plans to the Board of Alders for a public artwork to replace the long-gone Christopher Columbus statue.

Just as abruptly as Mayor Joe Ganim had a 60-year-old statue of Christopher Columbus removed from Seaside Park over two years ago and placed in an old horse barn there, his administration last week relocated the bronze monument to the Circulo Sportivo Italian American Club.
Where the statue, donated in 1965 by representatives of the local Italian community, winds up from there is unclear. Back at Seaside in the South End? On other public land? At the club or on other private property? The moving of the statue, done for the second time without the authorization of the city's park commission, ca...

A tiny, darkened hallway tucked away at Kidcity children’s museum leads to a new and cozy, wondrous room that evokes a piazza in Melilli, Sicily, just before dusk. A faux marble fountain of dolphins leaping high into the air seem frozen in time as the smell of coffee wafts from a cafe in the corner, and royal green handkerchiefs, scattered on the stone-like floor, are pushed into tiny portals by little hands.

This year’s festival was a big success with groups traveling in on buses from Connecticut and Massachusetts. The day began with the Padre Pio Garden being blessed by Farther Flavio. This garden was built last year with the help of Spirit of Hope of Johnston. The garden is circular, about 30-feet diameter, with a custom steal sculpture of Padre Pio. There is also a kneeler and relics on-site.
The movie, "We’ll Rise at Dawn," was shown. It is about two young boys in search of the life of Padre Pio, a concert featuring tenor Austin Burns, veneration of a Padre Pio relic, confession, lunch and a M...

She was born on May 10, 1931 in Newark, N.J., the only child of Aurelio Artillio and Immaculata (Spallone) Basile. She spoke only Italian until age seven and spent childhood summers on the Jersey shore. There she became an avid fisherman. St. Anthony’s Feast in Boston’s North End culminated with an explosion of Italian pride. While the Feast itself came to Boston by way of Montefalcione, there is no denying that this Feast has Beantown written all over it. Following a Mass in Italian at the North End’s St. Leonard of Port Maurice Church, the statue of St. Anthony is brought to the streets for a 10-hour procession so as many people as possible can venerate this powerful saint.
We were able to meet some of the Feast Bands who were preparing to walk with St. Anthony outside the church, all of whom were excited and looking forward...

A streetside Mass provided one of the most moving moments of St. Anthony’s Feast in Boston for me this past weekend. The outdoor Mass in honor of St. Anthony is held the Saturday evening of St. Anthony’s Feast, where Via Di Santa Lucia and Via Di Sant’Antonio meet.
This year’s Mass was presided over by Fr. Michael Della Penna, the pastor of the North End’s St. Leonard of Port Maurice Parish, which was the first Catholic church in New England to be founded by Italian immigrants. My mother, Sean, and I were within the first two rows, so our vantage point was excellent.

It was a celebration not only of ties that bind, but of ties that could be created, then reinforced. This past weekend, Irpinia Stories had the chance to go on the road to Boston, MA, to participate in the North End’s Saint Anthony’s Feast, which is the largest of its kind in New England, as I have written in a previous post. The Feast was brought to the North End by immigrants from Montefalcione, and the tradition has continued for more than 100 years.
I have been to the North End on many occasions, my books are sold at I AM Books, and the late Anthony V. Riccio, a dear friend and fellow Ital...

Many of the societies rented storefronts for use as a clubhouse. This must have been a major accomplishment — providing a physical space in which the business of the organization could be carried out. But equally important, a place for men to socialize and share ideas and comment on the state of affairs.
Not many immigrants were overtly political, but many had opinions regarding current events both here and in Italy, and upon gaining citizenship and the voting franchise, many were developing a keener interest in local issues. But the conversations were usually confined to such places that didn...

Italian American organizations in Massachusetts have seen a revival as of late. The unwarranted attacks on elements of our Heritage have brought attention to the fact that Italian Americans have a rich culture that must be respected and maintained. What is clear is that Italian / Italian American organizations are seeing the need to work together to protect that Heritage.
The traditional Columbus Day Parade in East Boston was not scheduled this year. So as not to lose the essence of this long and popular tradition celebrating Italian American Heritage, the Italian American Alliance is making...

“Cooking alla Giudia: A Celebration of the Jewish Food of Italy” is the ultimate tribute to the wonderfully rich, yet still largely unknown, culinary heritage of the Jews of Italy.
From Roman deep-fried artichokes (carciofi alla giudia) to Venetian sarde in saor (sweet-and-sour sardines), Apulian orecchiette pasta and Sicilian caponata, some of Italy’s best-known dishes are Jewish in origin. But little is known about the Jewish people in Italy and their culinary traditions.

The lights are being hung as we speak, and history is about to be made in Danbury, CT. Well, the lights were hung, and then taken down but more on that later. The Galante family is working with the City of Danbury on the 1st annual San Gennaro Festival in Danbury. The Festival begins Wednesday September 7 and runs until Sunday September 11.
The Italian Festival or Feast of San Gennaro is so close that the city has begun to hang the lights already. These lights are synonymous with this event, and I'm told these are the official lights that have been hung in Little Italy for so many years.
