Karen McWhorter, the Collier-Read director of Curatorial, Education, and Museum Services at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, walked into the center’s temporary photography exhibit space. “We'll walk through and check out a couple of these. Some are printed in larger format on metal,” McWhorter said as she started a quick tour of the newest photography exhibit, Italy’s Legendary Cowboys of the Maremma.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art is borrowing a famous work by Italian Baroque master Caravaggio from Rome for a temporary display. On Friday, MIA announced that the painting “Judith and Holofernes,” also known as "Judith Beheading Holofernes" is currently on display on the museum’s third floor.
The work, which was completed in 1599, is on loan from the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica in Rome. It depicts a scene from the Old Testament of the Bible in which a widow, Judith, beheads a general, Holofernes.

For centuries, Italian cowboys — i butteri as they are called — have raised horses and herded cattle through regions of the southern European nation. There are many parallels one can draw from their culture and lifestyle with western American cowboys, but for a couple significant differences; these cowboys have more than 2,500 years of history in the saddle and their unique way of life is more threatened.
It was a decade ago that journalist and artist Gabrielle Saveri was finally able to find a contact within the tight group after many futile attempts. She searched hard for the cowboys while w...

Can you imagine the stress on poor old Vincenzo Capone as he tried to hide his real identity? What would his fellow prohibition agent friends think if they found out the man they knew as “Richard Hart” — a guy fighting corruption and crime just like they were — actually shared a last name with the most notorious gangster of the era: “Capone.”
And it wasn’t just a shared last name, they shared parents. “Richard Hart” was Al Capone’s older brother. It all sounds too unbelievable to be true. How could Richard Hart/Vincenzo Capone have plotted such a different path for his life than his gangster b...

Few art aficionados can rattle off many names of 18th-century women artists. And one who is Jewish? That’s almost like chancing upon a yeti riding a unicorn. Having bought a Torah ark curtain by Simhah Viterbo (1739-79) in 2019, the Saint Louis Art Museum is sticking with the Jewish artist, whose husband and son were rabbis.
In December, it bought an embroidered cover for a synagogue reader’s desk—more commonly known as a bimah—at a Sotheby’s auction. As the year 2022 draws to a close - a year in which we celebrated the 35th anniversary of the St Louis-Bologna Sister Cities - we have yet another reason to celebrate. Our board member and VP, Elizabeth Bernhardt, Ph.D., has announced the publication of her long-awaited book on the life of renaissance Bolognese noblewoman Genevra Sforza de' Bentivoglio. In 2019, after living in Italy for over twenty years, Dr. Bernhardt returned to her birthplace, St Louis. For more than 120 years, the Potenza Lodge has served as a safe haven for North Denver’s Italian community. Though the present day lodge on 38th Avenue and Shoshone Street differs in many ways from the mutual aid-based society founded in 1899, the lodge principles remain steady: amore (love), benevolenza (good will), and pace (peace).
Early newspaper articles in Denver illustrate public misperceptions about the lodge, reporting that it was a secret society of immigrants from the city of Potenza, Italy. While it’s true the lodge was composed of hundreds of Italian immigrants from Potenza, The D...

In June 2021, mutual friends introduced Marianna Gatto — the executive director and cofounder of The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles (IAMLA) — to Harvard-educated lawyer, law professor, and Pueblo, CO native Fred Galves. A year prior, Galves had been hired by the city of Pueblo to serve as the mediator when tensions surrounding the city’s historic Columbus monument escalated.
The conversation between Gatto and Galves promptly shifted the mediation. “What I felt was missing, sometimes from both sides, was historical context — a sense of how and why these Columbus monuments came to be,” G...

Works by Sandro Botticelli, one of the most revered, culturally omnipresent artists in European history, aren’t the first thing you see when you enter the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s exhibition “Botticelli and Renaissance Florence: Masterworks from the Uffizi.” He’s relegated to the second room of the show bearing his name.
Instead, the new exhibit opens with a huge print of Franceso and Raffaello Petrini’s View of Florence with the Chain (1470), which maps the city at the time. The piece has been blown up 30 feet wide and 20 feet high, and important locations from the painter’s life have...

A wreath-laying ceremony for former German and Italian prisoners of war took place at the Fort Riley post cemetery, Thursday morning. The annual ceremony is held in remembrance of the POWs who lived and worked at Fort Riley between 1943 and 1946, specifically the 62 Germans and 11 Italians now buried here.
In 1943, War Department officials established Fort Riley as one of 600 locations across the United States selected to house German, Italian and Japanese POWs. The camps became home to 350,000 prisoners—enough to man 35 German army divisions; approximately 4,500 were held at Fort Riley. The P...

Among them was Nikoles Aleshi, a poor Italian immigrant who built a successful grocery business in Kansas City at the turn of the 20th century. Some people living in Pueblo chose to protest a Christopher Columbus monument located on Abriendo Avenue, while indigenous people and activist groups gathered as far away from the statue as they could. Activists say for them, Columbus represents colonialism, exploitation, and racism. Pueblo is known for its ethnic diversity, which includes a large Italian community. Traffic might have been a little lighter going to work on Monday on some Colorado roadways, since state employees had a paid holiday. So did some other workers, including Adams County staff. But an informal on-the-street survey in Colorado Springs showed most people were unaware of Monday’s holiday. For the third year, the first Monday in October was observed as Mother Cabrini Day.

The St. Alfio Society is looking to expand its Feast of the Three Saints this year by overcoming tensions of the past and reaching out to the Hispanic community of Lawrence. There will also be the return of many aspects that were restricted due to the pandemic.
The 2022 event, in its 99th year, will be held from Sept. 2-4 on Common Street. The feast has roots in the early 1900s, when Italian immigrants settled in Lawrence to work in the mills. These immigrants maintained their particular devotion to three martyred brothers, Saint Alfio, Saint Filadelfo and Saint Cirino.

For centuries, museums have taken their architectural cues from Renaissance palaces. The Louvre inhabits a Paris building that once served as an actual palace. And the concept remains embedded in the Beaux Arts architecture of so many museums, as well as their names — including the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. San Francisco’s ornate Palace of Fine Arts, a Beaux Arts confection built for the Panama-Pacific exhibition in 1915, is definitely channeling that vibe.
The Denver Art Museum, however, eschews the palace for a castle. And by castle, I don’t mean a picturesque Cinderella chatea...

In Vail, the name Tony G is synonymous with jazz music, but for the man himself, who died peacefully on Saturday, a look back at the Vail years might conjure stronger associations with his other passions, like family, fishing and making Italian sausages. After all, Tony Gulizia had been a jazz fixture in Omaha for more than 30 years before arriving in Vail.
In hearing about Tony G’s death, jazz guitarist Dave Stryker recently took time away from his busy tour schedule to comment on the impressiveness of that career, which lasted another three decades in Vail after beginning 34 years earlier in...

Oelwein Italian American Heritage Day has been set for Saturday, Aug. 13 at Red Gate Park. Organizers Teresa Pirillo Buckman and Anthony Ricchio report this year’s day is being scaled down due to conflicts in schedules and a smaller group to draw from.
“There are lots of things going on among the local families this year and it’s difficult to get participation. The senior members are aging out of being active and younger members don’t show much interest,” Ricchio said.

It has long been rumored that a shipwreck in the distant past sent a precious Roman marble statue – a rare copy of a fifth-century BC depiction of the “Doryphoros”, or spear-bearer – into the depths of the seas off Italy. That was the story given in the late 1970s when the statue appeared out of nowhere in Munich’s Glyptothek, the city’s museum of ancient Roman and Greek art.
A dealer had loaned it to the museum in anticipation of a possible sale, and the story he then told was of an image saved from the ravages of seawater and kept in a private collection, where it escaped notice for decades....

Italian American Women of Iowa (IAWI) celebrated La Festa della Donna Day with a gentle reminder that heritage is still important. The ladies of Italian American Women of Iowa (IAWI) hosted La Festa della Donna Day on Saturday March 5th from 12:00pm-2:00pm at A.H. Blank Golf Course. The celebration consisted of a luncheon designed around Italian fare, including the famous mimosa cake.
Attendees heard from three generations of Italian American speakers stating what it means to be an Italian American Woman and what they wanted for our future generations. Speakers Nancy Danca, Nicole Graziano and...

America is a melting pot. It is a place where folks of all creeds, religions, ethnicities and backgrounds can come and make a better life for themselves and their families. I really like the term “Melting Pot,” especially for our area, because most of the ethnic groups came here to work in our steel industry where the process of making steel involved melting raw ingredients together to form a finished product.
Looking at the different folks who worked in our plants and factories many were immigrants or first-generation Americans who still had strong ties to their original homelands. At the tur...

During the 1970s the Rev. Salvatore E. Polizzi had become a national figure for his work in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis. Residents were shocked when news came that he was being reassigned. Here is our coverage from March 1, 1980.
A friend of his calls it the mustache incident. In telling about it, there is a bit of soft laughter. It is so like him, said the other priest. Years ago, the Rev. Salvatore E. Polizzi grew a fine mustache. He was proud of it, as most new mustache-growers are. Time went by, and he learned, through the labyrinthian ways of the archdiocese, that Cardinal John Jos...

What were thousands of enemy soldiers doing in Iowa from 1943 to 1946? Find out at the Humanities Iowa program at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 at the Le Grand Pioneer Heritage Library. Chad W. Timm, an Associate Professor of Education at Simpson College, will present “Working with the Enemy: German, Italian and Japanese Prisoners of War in Iowa during the Second World War.”
As part of a relatively quiet and under-publicized government program, thousands of enemy soldiers invaded Iowa in 1943. With the hugely successful 1942 Allied campaign against Adolf Hitler’s Afrika Corps in North Africa, the numbe...

Many have dubbed America to be a melting pot of cultures that has coagulated into something unique. Other scholars argue that the country is more of a tapestry, where some cultures are maintained and others are transformed. For Francesca Ciancimino Howell, this tapestry metaphor seems more relevant–as an Irish-Italian-American, her unique heritage greatly inspired her academic studies.
These studies, in turn, inspired her 2018 academic work "Food, Festival and Religion", which will be discussed in more detail at an Inkberry event. The event, which will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25,...

The iconic Butler Mansion on Fleur Dr in Des Moines IA, was built in 1934, in a style the architecture magazines called Streamlined Moderne, a late version of art deco that possibly had more of the practical and less panache. It was forward-looking per the wishes of Earl Butler, an engineer who had lived in the city about three decades, and his architect George Kraetsch, also a Des Moines native. The Butler Mansion was built for durability, all reinforced concrete, steel trusses and large, steel windows that rolled outward.

Rock Springs, Wyo., isn’t normally known for movie premiers. But on Sept. 25, members of the community gathered to hear the story of one of their own. Archie Hays American Legion Post 24 hosted a documentary film screening that details the horrifying journey of a World War II POW.
It wasn’t until 10 years after his grandfather's passing that Mark Pedri began to discover a man he had never known. A native of Rock Springs and member of Sons of The American Legion Squadron 24, Mark uses film to chronicle what it took to finally and truly know his late grandfather.

As Catholics mark on Monday the 75th anniversary of Frances Xavier Cabrini becoming the first naturalized American saint, Colorado is celebrating the second Mother Cabrini Day, a state holiday that closes most government offices. Gov. Jared Polis signed House Bill 1031 last year to replace the controversial Columbus Day for the patron saint of immigrants, whose ties to Colorado are deep.
The permanent holiday annually falls on the first Monday of October, just years after then-Gov. John Hickenlooper declared a one-time St. Frances Cabrini Day in Colorado in 2017 to recognize the 100th annive...

Tomatoes, onions, and garlic are sauteed and reduced to a perfect consistency. The sauce is seasoned, and roasted red peppers are marinated in the mixture. Freshly charred sausage is then covered with the peppers to create the iconic sandwich of Omaha’s Santa Lucia Festival.

St. Paul's Italian Festival plans to bring back its traditional format as the state lifts its capacity limits and the CDC issues new mask guidance. The festival, centered around St. Paul Roman Catholic Church at 16th and Walnut Streets, is scheduled for Aug. 6-8. Organizers waited to make the announcement in order to confirm the availability of tents and other supplies needed to host the festival. In 2020, event organizers had to pivot because of the risks of spreading COVID-19 at large gatherings. The festival was forced to become a drive-through food pick-up event.

The section of Cape Girardeau known as Haarig -- the Good Hope Street area -- is historically thought of as being the German section of town. But the area was also home to several Italian families. One notable family residing and working in the area was the Sciortino family: John (shown above); his wife, Josephine; three daughters, Rose, Angela and Catherine, and two sons, Joe and Paul.
In a submitted article published in 2006 in the Southeast Missourian, Elroy F. Kinder of Cape Girardeau, the husband of one of John Sciortino's granddaughters, provided some family history:

It is said that every family heirloom holds a unique and deeply personal history. The story of my heirloom—a late Victorian golden oak dresser—begins with a flood: the 1921 Pueblo, Colorado flood. Although the dresser figures in my earliest memories and, more than any other piece of furniture, has remained a fixture in my life, it was not until recently that I came to understand the enormity of the event—the tragedy—that begot this most treasured heirloom.
I first encountered the word heirloom in the second grade when my class was reading a story about a girl who had unraveled a family mystery...

For more than 15 years, Monsignor Thomas Fucinaro has served as chaplain on the University of Dallas’ Eugene Constantin Campus (affectionately known as Due Santi) just outside of Rome, Italy. However, in May, Pope Francis reassigned him to his home diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska, beginning on Feb. 2, 2022, as pastor of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ.
“There is an eloquence and a providential symmetry to my departure at this moment in time, for just as I began my service to the Holy See and initial assistance to UD in my 33rd year, I now leave Rome and UD in my 33rd year of priesthood,” said F...

There's a special kind of church in Uptown right now that has a congregation of just one. "It's become a church space for me, yes it has," Mark Balma said. "It definitely feels like that now." Balma has created a church-like space for himself in Uptown, where he has rented a studio to work on his paintings. He spends hours there each day, bringing to life three women of faith.
Except, his portraits aren't simple portraits. They are 20 feet tall. "I was working in Assisi, where I have my studio, and the parish priest from the city of Terni, where the church is located, sought me out because of...

Erie News Now has spent the last week taking a look at plans for the region's big summer festivals, fairs and events to see how organizers plan to approach things this year. Our focus this time is on St. Paul's Italian Festival, centered around St. Paul Roman Catholic Church at 16th and Walnut Streets. It's normally a colorful, noisy, vibrant social event in Erie's Little Italy neighborhood, but in 2020 event organizers had to pivot because of the risks of spreading COVID-19 at large gatherings.

On the afternoon of March 28, several individuals could be found near the Pueblo Columbus statue seeking recognition and action from the city. The action is largely organized through two groups: Take It Down Pueblo and El Movimiento Sigue — The Movement Continues.
Together, the groups are restarting protests from last year concerning the Christopher Columbus Statue located on Abriendo Avenue in the Mesa Junction. Their goal is for the statue — which they say is an "eyesore" — to be removed, noting research that conflicts with information taught in public school curriculums.

Vic Cadice, of Jefferson City, recalls admonishments from his father that included staying out of trouble as not to defame yourself, your country, your family name, and remaining focused on earning a good education. These teachings were the result of his father's experiences in his native Italy and were highlighted by two brothers serving on separate continents for the same cause during World War I, along with a fascinating immigration story.
Gaspere "Jasper" Cadice was born Dec. 17, 1898, in the historic city of Marsala in western Sicily in Italy. When he was only 10 years old, Jasper's fathe...

On Wednesday, Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen (R-Alexandria) presented legislation in the Senate’s State Government and Finance Committee that would restore and repatriate the Christopher Columbus statue to the Capitol grounds. The statue was torn down on June 10during a wave of unrest across the Twin Cities. “Rioters do not dictate the policies of our state, nor do their opinions and beliefs represent the views of every Minnesotan,” Senator Ingebrigtsen said.
“This is public property, and it belongs to everyone. Minnesota has clear procedures that everyone in this state needs to abide by, whether y...
