Why Efforts To Abolish Columbus Day Are Wrong

Over the past several years, many cities and towns across the country have abolished Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, citing the discrimination, land grab and colonialism that followed the arrival in America of Christopher Columbus.

Rather than celebrate Columbus on the second Monday in October as we do in Connecticut, groups of supporters want to use that day to recognize the suffering of the Native Americans as well as their contributions.
