For much of its history, the United States considered Columbus a man worthy of admiration. Columbus Day is one of America’s oldest patriotic holidays, first celebrated in the 19th century. It recognizes the achievements of the great Renaissance explorer. Christopher Columbus was a hero, a deeply Christian, compassionate man, contrary to revisionism.
Many false statements have been made about Columbus — statements without historical background or taken out of context. October 12, 1492, was the most influential and impactful day in world history. Nothing was more dynamic than connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa with North and South America.
