But there's another Italian cardinal who deserves attention, as he is at the center of a complex case that’s difficult to resolve.
 
Cardinal Angelo Becciu has been excluded from voting, but there is no written document stripping him of his cardinal rights. Becciu was involved in a Vatican trial that led to his first-degree conviction for "5 years and 6 months in prison, a permanent ban from public office, and an 8,000-euro fine." Following this, a statement from Pope Francis announced Becciu's renunciation of his cardinal rights, including his right to participate in the conclave.
