Organizing a conclave is no simple task, and Rome is preparing to host one with three significant challenges. We've previously written about the possibility of three Italian cardinals being "papabili" and the influence of three other Italian cardinals, though over 80. But there's another Italian cardinal who deserves attention, as he is at the center of a complex case that’s difficult to resolve.
Cardinal Angelo Becciu has been excluded from voting, but there is no written document stripping him of his cardinal rights. Becciu was involved in a Vatican trial that led to his first-degree conviction for "5 years and 6 months in prison, a permanent ban from public office, and an 8,000-euro fine." Following this, a statement from Pope Francis announced Becciu's renunciation of his cardinal rights, including his right to participate in the conclave.
