If you love Italian wine, Piedmont could very well be your favorite region. Piedmont is in the North of Italy, at the foot of the Alps. In fact, “foot of the mountain” is the English translation of the word “Piedmont.” The three most famous varieties growing here are Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolchetto.
Among the Piedmontese, wines made from the Barbera and Dolchetto grape varieties are what one drinks while waiting for the Nebbiolo wines to mature. This Nebbiolo maturation process can take as much as ten years. Yet there is another grape variety in Piedmont that few people know.
