Milan wins in one of the categories of the first edition of the Earthshot Prize, an international award for the best solutions to protect the environment. The Milanese project that won the category "A world without waste" is that of the neighborhood hubs against food waste, born just before the coronavirus emergency and consolidated in the midst of need as a reality of help and recovery, under the hat of 'Food policy' to which the City of Milan adheres since the Expo.
The prize of one million pounds - explains the City of Milan - will be used to strengthen the Hub, open new ones, "ensuring long-term sustainability and replicate this virtuous good practice in the network of cities that work with Milan on food policy, starting from the network of cities of C40 and the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact.
Today Milan, thanks to the alliance between the City and the Third Sector, has three operational Neighborhood Hubs: Isola (2019), Lambrate (2020) and Gallaratese (2021). The realization of the first Hub involved Banco Alimentare of Lombardy and allowed to save more than 10 tons of food per month, ensuring in one year a flow of 260 thousand equivalent meals, which reached 3,800 people, thanks to the contribution of 20 supermarkets, 4 company canteens and 24 Third Sector organizations.
