La gioia means “joy” in Italian. Laura Marino is filled with it after preparing to reopen the Italian deli and import business that her family has owned and operated in Schenectady for the past three decades. Marino will relaunch La Giola this fall after a brief closure.
Homemade pasta, meatballs, sauce and bracciole are in her blood, both literally and figuratively. Marino’s mother, Modesta DiCarlo, opened the Van Vranken Avenue mainstay with her sister, Anna DiCocco, in 1989. The pair retired in June, shuttering the store so they could live out a life of leisure after decades of non-stop work, including making pasta, sauce and to-go meals from old-school family recipes.
