Chicago chef Matthias Merges' new restaurant, A10, located on the 1400 block of 53rd Street, is slated to open in mid-October, according to Calmetta Coleman, director of communications for Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago.

The latest project by Merges — once the Chef de Cuisine at the now-closed upscale restaurant Charlie Trotter — is a Northern Italian and Southern French-themed restaurant named for a highway that spans the two regions.

Merges told the Herald Monday A10 will serve such foods as bread and handmade pastas, as well as wine and cocktails. The city has approved its June 26 filing for a liquor license to allow "consumption on premise," according to the chef.

Coleman said the restaurant, on which interior construction began in July, is the result of a University of Chicago outreach to Merges "as part of broader efforts to bring more amentities to Hyde Park."
