Italian American Cultural Club announces award of seven $1,000 scholarships

Scholarship recipients were announced when the Italian American Cultural Club held its April 8 meeting at St. Florian Hall which was attended by 140 members.

President Carmella Gentile presided at the meeting where Theresa Metcalf of the scholarship committee announced the names of seven students who will each receive a $1,000 Rev. Father Stabene Memorial Scholarship. They are:

Marlena Piergallini, daughter of Todd and Tina Piergallini, who will graduate from Buckeye Local High School and attend Ohio University;

Brooke Piergallini, daughter of Lewis and Lori Piergallini, who will graduate from Indian Creek High School and attend Ohio State University;

Frank DiCarlantonio, son of Frank and Cathy DiCarlantonio, who will graduate from Catholic Central High School and attend Franciscan University of Steubenville,.

Danielle Irvin, daughter of David and Deanna Gentile Irvin, who will graduate from Buckeye Local High School and attend the University of Cincinnati;

Taylor Clark, daughter of Janette Clark, who will graduate from Catholic Central High School and attend Florida State University;

Jenna Ogden, daughter of Donald and Mary Ann Ogden, who will graduate from Catholic Central High School and attend West Virginia University; and

Elisa DiMeo, daughter of Sam and Renee DiMeo, who is graduating Archbishop Hoban High School and will attend the University of Mount Union.

In reports, Tammy Cashioli announced the theme for this year's Campo Italiano will be "Got Roots" with the next planning meeting for language classes set for 6 p.m. today at Create-A-Room. Anyone who has an idea or a story to pass along to the children about their own roots can contact Cashioli at (740) 632-6029.

She reported several youth counselors have been training to receive their Counselors in Training certification, and another class is scheduled for May 5 and May 19.

Mariella Pittera, Lucia Scaffidi and Rick Pastre worked with club members' children participating in the Festival of Nations.

Pittera was to conduct a meeting for Una Serata.

Michele Fabbro announced the trustees will meet Monday to audit the treasurer's and Secretary's books.

The will sponsor a green for the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce's golf event in May.

The meeting included a presentation by Michael Orecchio, owner of Bella Vino in Weirton, who demonstrated how to make premium wine with the specialized kinds of grape juices found in his store, Bella Vino.

Vicki Ross won the 50-50 drawing. Other prize winners were Theresa Laman, Mary Conroy and Mickey Sellaroli.
