Groceria Merante in Oakland is celebrating 40 years of filling Pittsburghers’ plates with authentic and imported Italian food. The family-owned market will hold an anniversary celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, with food samples, cooking demos, bocce, Italian music and a visit from Mayor Bill Peduto.

Co-owner Filomena Merante said she’s counting on good weather. Much of the fun will be set up along the sidewalk because the shop itself is only 1,000 square feet. “We stuff everything in here,” she said. She and her sister Julia co-own the shop, which was started 40 years ago by their parents, Italo and Filomena Merante, who had also been grocers in Italy before moving to Pittsburgh.
