An upcoming special exhibit and talk presented by the Schuyler County Historical Society will honor the founders of the county’s Italian community. The first known Italian immigrant to Schuyler County is believed to be Albert Pecoraro, of Roccaromana, who settled in Watkins in 1888 when he was 18 years old. He operated a grocery store and later a barbershop. Job opportunities would bring many more to the county over the ensuing decades.

The Historical Society will honor original Italian family founders in a special exhibit opening in August, in time for the annual Schuyler County Italian-American Festival in Watkins Glen. The Society is now collecting information about the founders. A special form asks for information such as places and dates of birth in Italy, and why the people immigrated to Schuyler County. A photo is also requested.
