Rosati’s patriarch enjoyed life and cookies

Fred Rosati loved people. Even in his last few years, the patriarch of the Rosati’s Pizza restaurant group—who died March 30 at age 102 in Cave Creek—would strike up conversations with fellow shoppers at area stores. “He’d go to Walmart with his caretaker, get a motorized cart and talk to everyone” said his daughter, Regina Rosati, with a laugh. “He loved people. He loved to talk to everyone.”

Born in Chicago on June 23, 1917, Fred was one of 10 children and the “keeper of a great family restaurant tradition.” In the late 1890s, his family served Italian food to customers in New York. After the turn of the century, the family moved to Chicago and opened another restaurant that served Italian-style pizza before founding the chain.
