Rogue Valley Italian

A hallmark of Rogue Valley viticulture is its diversity. When I first got interested in local wines, I went to a lecture given by Greg Jones, then a Southern Oregon University professor and research climatologist specializing in viticultural studies — he has since moved on to Linfield College in McMinnville, where he put the number of varietals produced here at around 70.

While some in the industry feel the Rogue Valley should market itself under a flagship varietal, as the Willamette does with pinot noir, our grape and wine production shows no sign of narrowing its focus. I for one am delighted that our region supports small plantings of uncommon wine grapes for our winemakers to turn into rare gems.
