Plans underway for annual Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Honoring a 91-year-old tradition, members of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast committee are preparing for Westerly's annual Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which falls on Sunday, July 14, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. As they do each year, the members have begun the task of raising funds to help defray the expenses associated with the feast, money that will help purchase scapulars, prayer cards, and pay for a band and fireworks display.

The feast commemorates an 1892 miracle that took place in the farming village of Toreannugita, Italy, where farmers prayed and prayed for rain during a 19-month long drought. Their prayers were finally answered on July 16, the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, when the rains came pouring down. The festivities open with triduum Masses on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, July 10, 11, and 12 at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the 7  a.m. Mass will be said for deceased members of the committee and attended by the present-day members.
