Middletown mayor: Why Christopher Columbus statue was removed

On Saturday, the statue of Christopher Columbus in Harbor Park was removed. On Sunday, Mayor Ben Florsheim took to Facebook to explain why the sculpture, which he said had been “donated by several groups of local, mostly Italian-American families in the mid-1990s,” was taken down.

“First, it has been slated for a temporary move for a while,” Florsheim wrote. “Maintenance work at Harbor Park, scheduled to start in early July, requires the removal and storage of the statue. The plan was approved at the last meeting of the Planning and Zoning Commission.
