Loving Italian family, faith and caring for newborns were hallmarks of Frances Carpegna's life

Frances Victoria Carpegna died July 23 at the age of 95. The majority of babies born at Washington County Hospital between 1953 and 1986 were cared for by Frances “Fran” Carpegna in the nursery. Back in those days, new mothers stayed in the hospital for about a week and rested, while the nurses, including Fran, lovingly cared for the babies. 

“Literally every single person born in Washington County Hospital she would have taken care of,” said niece Mary Ann Grandinett of Fairplay. After Fran graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1946, she had other ideas, though. “She always harbored the desire to work in the exciting ER or be an operating-room nurse,” said nephew Anthony Britti of Hagerstown.
