Italian flag flies at Riley Plaza

Twelve flags for Latin American countries came down at Riley Plaza Tuesday morning while one went up to replace them, honoring Italian Americans and, for some, Christopher Columbus. The City Council passed an order in mid-September to raise an Italian flag at Riley Plaza, which includes a 13-flagpole monument bordering Margin, Norman and Washington streets downtown.

The order initially targeted Oct. 14, the date that Columbus Day is observed, but it was changed to Oct. 1 after numerous objections were raised on the council floor in light of Columbus' controversial legacy, and it was pointed out that there's a trend within communities to instead honor indigenous cultures on the holiday.
