John Patrick Shanley is still best-known for his deeply dramatic, Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Doubt,” as well as his Oscar-winning script for the movie “Moonlighting.” But 1988’s “Italian American Reconciliation” showcases an early-career Shanley’s comic voice, as he brings an almost operatic tone to this saga of ruptured romance.
In its review of the play’s original off-Broadway production, the New York Times called the work a “slice of sometimes gooey, sometimes piquant, always moonlit romanticism, Italian-American-style.” Charles Peters directs Rhiannon McAfee, Marco Kengott, John DeCarlo, Lynnia Shanley and Gina Marie Cioffi in the work’s Scripps Ranch Theatre revival, which opens this weekend.
