On August 21, 2018, the Sacramento City Council declared the second Monday of October as Italian-American Heritage Day. This is the same day as Columbus Day is observed. The Resolution was the result of efforts by the local Italian-American community to have their traditional holiday recognized by the City. Members of the Italian community were on hand at City Hall to receive the Resolution during a ceremony recognizing the contributions of the Italian-American community.

Italian-Americans were among the earliest pioneers of Sacramento and contributed greatly to the development of the City. Italian-Americans settled in many parts of Sacramento. The largest concentration settled in East Sacramento where they established their own historic “Little Italy” neighborhood. Sacramento Italian-Americans continue to be an active and vibrant part of our neighborhoods with Italian organizations and a Cultural Center serving and preserving the culture and community.

The City Council resolution encourages the celebration of Italian-American Day and encourages the study of the role and contributions of Italian Americans in the City’s public schools on Italian-American Day.
