Fate of Norwalk’s Columbus statue remains uncertain

While some Connecticut municipalities are removing Christopher Columbus statues in the face of renewed outcry over his history of slavery and genocide against Native Americans, the future of the city’s own monument to the Italian explorer remains unclear.

Mayor Harry Rilling said the city has not received any requests to remove the Columbus statue, which sits in Thomas C. O’Connor Park on West Avenue, right across from the Interstate 95 exit, and there are no plans to tear it down. “I don’t think I can arbitrarily and capriciously make a decision of that nature,” Rilling said.
