More than 60,000 car lovers beat a path to the Phoenix Art Museum in 2007 to see “Curves of Steel,” a blockbuster exhibit of classic automotive designs. The museum is hoping to make an even bigger noise this fall with “Legends of Speed,” featuring 21 racing cars that are not only gorgeous works of art but also feats of engineering that changed the history of motor sports. Opening Nov. 3, the show includes cars driven to victory by Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt and Stirling Moss, among others.

“It will look at the evolution of race car design, it will look at a lot of the drivers who won races with these specific cars, and that lends a historic value to the automobiles,” said Gilbert Vicario, chief curator for the museum. “We’re also looking at the contribution of women race car drivers … one in the ’20s and one in the ’60s, and then we have Lyn St. James, who is a Phoenix resident and race car driver, who is contributing to the catalog.”
