The Columbus Day Parade will return to the city’s streets for its 111th year after the City Council agreed to resume paying the police overtime costs.Columbus Parade organizers moved 2018’s celebration to Shelton over a dispute about the public safety bill. “Losing that last year was not one of our best moments,” Council President Aidee Nieves said Wednesday.

Nieves said the new municipal budget, which took effect July 1, contained around $166,000 to police nearly a half-dozen well established parades, like the Columbus Day, Puerto Rican and Juneteenth celebrations — as long as those events had settled past overtime debts. Columbus Parade officials had refused to pay the $7,000 debt Mayor Joe Ganim’s administration claimed was owed from 2017 as well as future charges, so Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti last year offered to host for free.
