BY: Honorary Consul of Italy to North Carolina
The Honorary Consul, Dr. Claudio Carpano, and CCI-NC would like to recognize the achievements of two fine, young Italian athletes who saw great success at Duke University as a result of their hard work and talent.
Virginia Elena Carta, who recently graduated, is one of only 20 golfers in NCAA history to win both a NCAA Individual and team championship. Furthermore, she finished in the top 20 of four straight ACC Championships, helped lead Duke to two ACC Championships in 2017 and 2018, and concluded her career with a 73.11 stroke average to rank eighth on the Blue Devil record charts.
Daniele Proch, Men's Soccer, is a senior. Last season he made the All-America second team, which was the highest All-America selection for a Blue Devil since 2011. He also made All-ACC first team and All-South Region first team choice, led the team with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points, and ranked third in the ACC in goals per game and fifth in points per game. Moreover, he was voted the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player.
Proch had five game-winning goals, including the winner against Vermont to give Duke the John Rennie Nike Invitational title and Proch the tournament’s MVP award.
Congratulations Virginia and Daniele!
