Almost since it opened in 2008, Allentown's America on Wheels Museum has struggled financially, dipping each year into a dwindling endowment to cover operating costs while its leadership waited for development of the city's Lehigh riverfront to shift into gear.
The museum — which chronicles the history of over-the-road transportation — has developed a dedicated following among local classic car enthusiasts, but struggled to attract enough patrons to repay the $2.7 million balance of a $4 million construction loan from BB&T Bank.
