The Commander General of the Italian Guardia Costiera, Admiral Chief Inspector Nicholas Carlone, visited the headquarters of the U.S. Coast Guard in Washington, where he met with the Commander, Admiral Linda Lee Fagan, in recent days.

A number of matters were discussed during the meeting, with a focus on the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the heads of the two organizations in 2021. The focus was, in particular, on safeguarding human life at sea, safety of navigation, combating illegal fishing and training.

“The meeting,” commented Commander General Carlone, “confirms the ever-closer proximity and collaboration between the Italian Guardia Costiera and the U.S. Coast Guard,” which Admiral Carlone called “an organizational model of excellence, a reference point for all organizations with Coast Guard functions in the world,” and stands as a testament to the “role and international projection - now consolidated - of the Italian Guardia Costiera.

Commander Fagan warmly welcomed the Italian delegation and expressed keen appreciation for the cooperation with the Italian Guardia Costiera, congratulating Admiral Carlone for chairing the upcoming Coast Guard Global Summit, Mediterranean Coast Guard Functions Forum, and European Coast Guard Functions Forum, to be held in September 2025 in Rome.

The Italian commander then visited the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, where the respective training tracks for future exchange projects were explained. While in the United States, the Italian delegation also met with Italian Ambassador Mariangela Zappia and the Chief of Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
