Fort Benning Observes German and Italian Memorial Day

Fort Benning observed the German and Italian memorial day at the main post cemetery today. There are 51 German and Italian veterans of world war two laid to rest at the Fort Benning cemetery. Those soldiers became prisoners of war after they were captured by the allies. Olaf Ladegast was the Keynote speaker and emphasized that although these countries have their differences today. They are still united.

"They are not separated, they lay side by side American soldiers and I think this is a great way to show how we can overcome conflict and how we can still in time of war can retain our respect for one another," Ladegast said. Lieutenant Colonel Corrado Carpentieri did the commemoration of the dead. He says promoting unity among everyone no matter your background is what is important.
