What should Syracuse do with Columbus Day and statue? Here are some ideas

A year after Mayor Ben Walsh called for talk about how the city remembers Christopher Columbus, he says he has no immediate plans to make changes to Columbus Circle or push to rename the October holiday. Yet Walsh said he is open to ideas that have come from a group of about three dozen people who’ve spent weeks talking, learning – and occasionally crying – about painful experiences that stretch across centuries.

That group, led by InterFaith Works, is a mix of Onondaga Nation members, Italians-Americans, scholars, ministers, community leaders and educators. They, too, aren’t ready to say whether Syracuse should rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day, as more than 100 other communities have nationwide.
