This replaces Columbus Day with the new holidays on any county calendars, schedules and administrative materials. Starting in 2019, the second Monday in October will be observed as Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day, according to a motion passed by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.
Late Tuesday night, council members voted 26 to five to approve that resolution. Moroni Benally, co-founder of the Utah League of Native American Voters, called the holiday declaration a "symbolic" change that empowers his people.
