The Greater Rockford Italian American Association celebrates local Italian heritage through things like Festa Italiana and the Amici Italiana dance troupe, but now the group wants to celebrate the history of local Italian families.
The group is asking all Italian-Americans in the Rockford are to take part in the Immigration Histories of Rockford's Italian Families project. The goal of the project is to tell the stories of people who emigrated from all Italian provinces to Rockford in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Families can submit one or two written pages sharing the stories of how their predecessors came to the Rockford area to the GRIAA's Culture and Education Committee. Those stories will then be shared at the group's tent at this year's Festa Italiana. You can learn more about the GRIAA at www.griaa.org.
