Just in time for Christmas, the Cleveland Museum of Art has acquired a circa-1675 marble sculpture, “Sleeping Christ Child’’ by Filippo Parodi, an associate of the great Italian Baroque sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini. The Parodi is on view today for the first time in the museum’s Gallery 217, the Reid Gallery, alongside the museum’s late altarpiece by Caravaggio of the crucifixion of Saint Andrew and “Boy Drinking,” by Annibale Carracci.
In a news release, the museum called the Parodi “an outstanding example of monumental Italian Baroque narrative sculpture.” “Apart from occasional portrait busts, ‘Sleeping Christ Child’ is among the most important marble sculptures by an associate of Bernini to have come on the market in recent years,” the museum said.
