The latest batch of acquisitions announced by the Cleveland Museum of Art is relatively small - only five objects. But several of the works involved should have an immediate impact when they go on view this week.A new exhibition opening Saturday at the museum focusing on five years' worth of recent acquisitions will include the freshly acquired 1701 baroque-era portrait of Francesca Gommi Maratti by her husband, the artist Carlo Maratti.
Little known outside of Italy, Maratti was considered the greatest painter of late 17th Rome. He was admired for his crisp, elegant classicism, which contrasted with the boiling energy and spectacular action usually associated with the baroque style. The museum described the portrait as an homage by Maratti to his spouse shortly after their marriage. Gommi had been the artist's mistress and model since at least the 1670s, according to the museum.
