In light of the recent discussions about Christopher Columbus, Chicago’s Italian American community will come together this Sunday, August 30 at Noon for a “North Side Italian American Heritage Rally”. The event will take place outdoors in the parking lot of the new location of The National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, 3417 North Harlem Avenue, Chicago.
“This will be a red, white and green celebration of our Italian American culture, as well as being a special salute to Italian American heroes on today’s front lines,” said Ron Onesti, Hall of Fame President. “We will salute those educators, first responders and medical professionals who have unselfishly gone beyond the call of duty during this most difficult of times,” Onesti said.
Also to be recognized will be Thomas Alessio, the White Sox fan who saw an appeal by a young lady at a Cubs’ game about needing a kidney. During the game, she walked around with a sign stating, "This lil' Cubbie needs a kidney". After seeing this on social media posted by the Cubs, Alessio heroically responded, was a match, and she is doing great today!
The live event will also be broadcast on Facebook. Masks will be required and distancing will be encouraged.
